In Microsoft Lync for Windows, when you click the X in the corner of the window to close it, the program keeps running in the background, so that you can receive alerts of incoming messages or calls. By default, Lync will be minimized to the Taskbar, like any other open window that you’ve minimized. However, you can change your settings so the program is minimized to the notification area instead: To minimize the Lync icon to the notification area instead of to the Taskbar:

  1. In Lync, click the Options icon ( The Options icon looks like a gear. ).
  2. In the left pane of the “Lync – Options” window, click General, if it is not already highlighted.
  3. Near the bottom of the window, under “Application Window”, check Minimize to the notification area instead of the task bar.
  4. Click OK.
